Word’s of Love # 5

In Nancy DeMoss’s Devotional Study – The Power of Words are many gems about the tongue which I have found helpful.

Some of the headings she has used are as follows with the corresponding Scripture truths:

Hold the Tongue –  Prov. 15:28           A Guarded Tongue –  Psalm 141:3

Silence is Golden – Prov. 10:19          Words of Restraint  – Prov. 17:27

Soft Answers    Prov. 15:1

Have you felt a convicting tug on you heart, as I have the last few weeks while presenting Word’s of Love”?  The Bible has been a mirror for us to look at our own need for improvement?   These things do not come to us naturally, but  by His power as we fill our lives with His Word and allow the Holy Spirit to speak wise, kind words through us. Let us not be temped to respond as the world does with vulgarity and taking the Lord’s name in vain.

Psalm 141:3 “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.”  This would indicate that the tongue is dangerous and we need to guard it.  Adrian Rogers said on one of his Sunday AM broadcast , “ Talk less and Bless others.”

The Scriptures describe the tongue as a fire, often we ladies complain because our husband does’t listen to us but perhaps they would listen more attentively if we had less to say and said it with love.

If you have liked this study about Word’s of Love and would like to have Nancy’s book you can go to reviveourhearts.com and see what is available…. CD $16.00, Workbook $6…or I would be willing to order some.

To quote Fenelon in The Seeking Heart,Try to practice silence as much as general courtesy permits. Silence encourages God’s presence, prevents harsh words, and causes you to be less likely to say something you will regret. Silence also helps you put space between you and the world. Out of the silence that you cultivate, you will find strength to meet your needs…..Accept what God chooses for you. This is more important than what you choose for yourself, for you are much too easy on yourself. Day by day give yourself to God. He carries you in His arms like a mother carries her child. Believe, hope, and love like a child. Look with love and trust to your heavenly Father.”

I Peter 3:3-4

Do not let your adorning be external…….. but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

Here are a few comment from  our daughter, Melony, who is a mother of eleven children and a pastor’s wife at Bear Lake, MI. She had some good insight on these articles on Words of Love.

She says: I have often said something and  later wondered if I had been offensive when I had no mean thoughts. I was just not sure how what I said had been taken.

I pray that God will change the way the person felt about what was said and that the Lord would erase what I have said from their thinking.

I like to ask God to examine my motives and bring out the best.

Good Reading on this subject by John Piper…. Desiring God.
