The Labor of Prayer

Jer. 33:3 “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty  things, which thou knowest not”

I Thes. 5:16-18   “16.  Rejoice evermore. 17. Pray without ceasing. 18. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

I would like to tell you of Edith Schaefer, a great prayer warrior, in her book The Art of Life,  crossway Books, Westchester, IL.

Conscientious Prayer, Devotional #24

Edith shared how as a small child she was skipping along beside Mr. Hoste, the director of the China Inland mission ( he had followed Hudson Taylor.)   He told her she could walk along if she wished but that it was his prayer time. She walked with him a number of times and learned that he prayed aloud, and counted it his responsivility to pray for four hours a day for each missionary, in the China Inland Mission, for each one and their children by name and about specific personal things. He carried the list with him. He prayed aloud and encouraged he to pray too.  She learned a great respect for the “work” of prayer.

She also shared how a farming friend who also prayed with a list for the L’Abri ministry as he drove his tractor and farmed his fields.  This too impressed her of the farmer in his tractor or the head of a mission both considered prayer more important than other things they might do.

We might not be able to pray for four hours, but there are times when we could spend a great deal of time in prayer.

She also said that there is a cumulative freedom of communication as you read and pray for a variety of needs in other people’s lives, as well as your own.

As time goes on there is a sense of quietness, like having been in the home of a very calm person, separated from your own pressures.  It can be like a protected quiet place. We all need to try this Conscientious Prayer time.

This will be a blessing for you and for those for whom you pray.

This was her  closing prayer:

“Lord, Give us the longing to spend tme with You, give us the time and give us the longing.  Through an extended period of time with you, inspire me to make this the norm of my Chrisitan life., Amen.”
