Scripture Memory

When I was attending Calvary Bible Church in Dowagiac MI during my Jr. and Sr High school years the teacher of the week-day Bible class which met after school one day a week, assigned myself and other teens in our youth group to write out the Scripture  memory verses and cut them in strips to hand out at the class.  Of course, she had an ulterior motive.  That motive was to help us learn the Scriptures ourselves.

While Ken was in seminary we attended Second Baptist Church in Grand Rapids where he was the Sunday School teacher of the college-age class. We had two children and near the Easter season Melony came and presented us a note from her S.S. teacher asking us to teach Melony (age 3-4)  Matthew 28: 5-6.  I was excited about teaching her the Scripture and right away began working with her and to my surprise, she learned it much faster than I ever learned Scripture in my teens.  I tried to teach her the verses with expression and her time came to say her part in the Easter program,  all dressed up in her special dress I made her for the occasion.  She stepped up to the microphone and I can still hear her little voice speaking those words.

“Matthew 28:5-6  (KJV)

5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.   6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

I have never forgotten that Scripture to this date, and while we were learning I began to realize the huge responsibility before me to help my children and other children to memorize the Word of God while they were young.  For many years I have used Bible Memory Association and started with the ABC Memory Book

This week I was talking to Melony on the phone and she mentioned that her daughter in law, Lisa was helping her son  Skylar learn Eph. 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourself, it is a gift of God.  Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

There is nothing more important to teach our children, grandchildren and yourself then the Word of God!

https://scripturememory.com/Here are just a few of the major reasons you should memorize Scripture:

1  It grows our love for God.

2  It’s God’s command.

3  It heals and comforts.

4  It saturates our hearts with truth.

5  It offers spiritual success.

6  It equips us for spiritual warfare.

7  It fuels our witness.

Couples in the Bible by Robert & Bobbie Wolgemuth is a one-year Devotional Study to Draw you Closer to God and Each other. (Bobbie went to be with the Lord after her battle with cancer in 2014)

Key Scripture: Genesis 6:1-22.

Let’s look at Noah and his wife, (whose name was not given in the Bible). Noah was a man of integrity, who walked righteously, in an evil world. Though he was mocked, she supported him while he followed the Lord’s detailed instructions on building the ark in preparation for the great flood. Perhaps people smiled and talked about them and their three sons, as they gathered the materials for the Ark. Noah warned them of their need for repentance. Perhaps she assured him, “Noah, God knows your heart. This is God’s battle.” Some onlookers may have even lent a hand, yet did  not believe.

Think of the task ahead of them with such a huge wooden craft, approximately the size of one and a half football fields and four stories high, to save Noah’s family and no-one knows how many  pairs of animals (est. tens of thousands) and enough space to store food for the time on board.  I sure wish Noah would have swatted those two mosquitos.

They chose to live holy lives in a corrupt society. Noah preached and I would think that his wife prayed as he warned the people and pled with them to turn from their sins. They carried the burden of knowing God was about to punish the wicked.  Perhaps they prayed daily for these people, and even feared that they may have missed someone.

The account of faithful Noah, his wife, his three sons and their wives is strong evidence that they discipled their children by living and teaching them to love and obey God. These girls from lost families were counted among the righteous.

Noah’s family made a clear choice in spite of temptations to conform to the world they  chose to serve the Lord.   You and your family can do the same.

Josh. 24:15 “As for me and my house we will Serve the Lord.”

Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah’s Ark

  1. Don’t miss the boat.
  2. Remember that we are all in the same boat.
  3. Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.
  4. Stay fit. When you’re really old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
  5. Don’t listen to the critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
  6. Build your future on high ground.
  7. For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.
  8. Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
  9. When you’re stressed, float a while.
  10. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
  11. No matter the storm, when you’re with God, There’s always a rainbow waiting.

Making Sure That You Know You Are Ready When the Lord Comes.

When inquiring of people where they are with the Lord we often get many different responses.

I did that when I was a child,  when I attended ____ church or release time class, yet each one did not sound confident in his standing with the Lord.

-Many say I did that at VBS or just I used to go to VBS in the summer.

-My uncle is a preacher, my mother taught me all that…

-I was baptized when I was _____ yet they don’t sound sure.

-I used to go to church.

-I did that at release time class but still they are uncertain in their response.

In most of those cases they remembered something in their past but did not sound confident in their stand with the Lord.

If you  aren’t sure it could be because, since you made that decision you were not  taught clearly what being saved really means.

Perhaps when you were discipled, you personally did not carry through with those steps of obedience and turn away from sin and disobedience.

How can you have confidence  in your salvation?

Tell the Lord that you want to KNOW that you are saved. Confess known sin to the Lord. Go to a strong Bible preaching church, be baptized and join that church, read your Bible daily, and pray, which is just talking to the Lord. Confessing any daily sin and being determined to go on from there and not continually live a life of sin. Ask God daily to help you when you are  tempted to sin.

You might say how do I know what to do or not to do?  Seek godly counsel from a pastor another Christian person in the church, attend church and listen intently to the preaching.

Claim God’s promises.  Open your Bible to John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son (by death on the Cross) that whosoever (you and me, everyone) believeth on Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.”     What kind of life _________________?  That is right everlasting life.

Once you know Christ, the first thing you need to do is tell someone that you have given you life to Christ and then do what you can every day to win someone else to Christ by being a witness.   What is a witness?  That is when you tell others what Christ has done for you and then that HE will do the same for them.

If you are fearful of saying the right thing ask the pastor or myself for a simple gospel tract to carry with you to share the Gospel and don’t give that one away.  Keep it and make a list of people you have led to Christ.

What is the Gospel?   Read the Scripture below from Matthew thoughtfully.

Have you ever had the privilege of leading some to Christ to be saved. If so raise your hands.

Now I am speaking especially to the children and young people today.  When you think about what you are going to do when you become an adult, first ask the Lord what He wants you to do and I am sure it will have something to do with spreading the Gospel.

Matthew 28:

16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Once you have receive Christ as your Saviour then the Great Commision above is your responsibility.  Go and tell others and lead them to Christ.

Here is a song that we do not want to be true of us as Christians.

 NO FRUIT FOR THE MASTER

  1. Jesus was traveling a dusty highway.

When in the Distance he saw a fig tree.

But drawing closer oh what did He see,

Nothing, Nothing but leaves.

Chorus:

No fruit for the Master

Nothing but leaves.

No Fruit for the Master See how He grieves

How many ther are who although they believe,

Have nothing, Nothing but leaves.

2.  Fruitless and barren they stand like that tree

Receiving his blessing so rich and so free.

But as Christ sees them He only can see.

Nothing, Nothing but leaves.

Chorus:

3.  Friend, ’tis a warning to you and to me

Are we as barren as that old fig tree?

And when the master looks down does he see.

Nothing, Nothing but leaves?

Chorus

***********

The fruit in our lives is those whom we influence to follow Christ…

Let us not be with out fruit.

Matthew 21:19

And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on you again forever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

It is Never Too Late to Change the course of your life….

Matthew 28: 18 Then Jesus came to them and said,“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, bap-tizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Ken’s father gave His life to the Lord in his 50’s and began studying for the ministry,  was ordained, and served as a pastor for 17 years. He preached from a chair the Wednesday night before his weak heart gave out he following Wed.  He spent himself for His Saviour.

My brother-in-law and his wife in their retirement years  took their RV and gave their lives to the Lord for His service as volunteers for a Christian organization that built churches. His wife Bille fixed meals for the workers for  YEARS.  Then Bill managed the camp grounds for Wycliff Bible Translators  and Billie volunteered  in the office for a while and then did alterations for people for a donation to the mission. They sang together also at various meetings. (I had the privilege of donating my commercial sewing machines to Wycliff which she used). When she developed Alzheimer’s they had to return home where they still were faithful as lay-workers in their local church. While they were able they did what they could to win people to the Lord.

My mother in her retirement years was a faithful caller in the nursing homes and also took the leadership of  A Women’s Bible class for several years until her heart became too weak. My sister took also began teaching a  Bible class and she also has a ministry of her own to nursing homes.  She is faithfully trying to win people to Christ and bring  them to a closer walk with Christ.

My younger adopted Brother had many shortcoming in his youth, and as an adult surrendered to Christ.  Today he is volunteering his life with the Christian Motorcycle Association seeking to win others to Christ.

It is never too late to serve the Lord and become involved in winning people to Christ… Are the things you do a true ministry for Christ?  Have you ever led someone to a saving knowledge of Christ?  Ask yourself …Are the things I do from day to day a service for the Lord. What will these things that I do count for in eternity?

Whatever it takes, learn to share the gospel and lead others to the saving knowledge of Christ before it is too late.

Go ye into all the world and teach the Gospel. Matt. 28:18-20.

This is the great commission to Christians to share the Gospel.

What is the Gospel?   That Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again and is coming again.     Let’s not keep your faith a secret.
